Deacon was a good dog, a beautiful collie, and we know a very treasured helper at Angel Paws dog rescue and companion at home and on the road to his beloved family. He was also our friend in the aether, making time out of his busy schedule to socialise at the blogging parties, always dropping by with interesting comments and imparting so much warmth and doggie history through his posts at Key West Collies. Along with Essex, he hosted a drop-by point on the great Animal Pirate Cruise of 2008, showing us around his home and giving us a memorable tour of Key West through a dog's eyes, he participated in the All-Animal Lyric Writing Bee and singalong, submitting his own puppy lyrics to "Both Sides Now" and growled at the Australian Talk-Like-A-Pirate Day. He was there for his family and pups in need, and he was there when so many of us said goodbye to loved ones now at the Bridge, and when at last my beloved Charlie crossed, and he was always ready in person or on the blogosphere to welcome new pups and friends to the community.
It sometimes happens that our beloved companions are needed beyond the Bridge sooner and more suddenly than we can understand, but we know that Deacon's golden heart and furry presence is helping those who need him there, just as he is looking back through the fog at his loved ones he had to leave behind. All of those dear friends who have gone ahead are welcoming him Home; he is not alone. Deacon was a friend, companion, comfort, and protector, but most of all, he was a DOG. We will miss you, friend!
"I wonder if it is heretical to believe that when at last my tired feet shall tread the Other Shore, a madly welcoming swirl of exultant collies—the splendid Sunnybank dogs that have been my chums here—will bound forward, circling and barking around me, to lead me Home! Heretical or otherwise, I want to believe it. And if I fail to find them there, I shall know I have taken the Wrong Turning and have reached a goal other than hoped for."

7 happy tails:
We are very sorry your friend had to go to the Rainbow Bridge. He sounds like a wonderful guy.
Thank you Islay and Dog Mom. It means a lot that you took time out. I tear up when I read or write about Deacon. I miss my boy. It will be a long day.

It was a shock to all, especially to Dog Dad. We are sad that Deacon had to leave so suddenly.
Somehow doesn't seem fair that Deacon had to go so soon. You wrote a lovely piece that I'm sure is comfort to his family.
